Alberto Gonzales has resigned, to be replaced by the Solicitor General Paul Clement as interim AG. As you can imagine, many Democrats and just about anyone who has not had a hemispherectomy are ecstatic. Here is the text of his resignation speech.
Of course, just because Fredo’s gone doesn’t mean that Congress is going to stop inquiring about what has gone on at DoJ under his tenure. The usual course of action by this administration is to let someone resign, then blame all their troubles on that person by letting the door hit them where the good Lord split them on their way out.

I can’t imagine a man that cannot recall what he cannot recall was the mastermind behind any of the troubles with the Justice Department. No, a reasonable supposition is that everything would have Karl Rove’s fingerprints on it, if only he didn’t wear gloves. And the man sitting in the Oval Office was only to happy to give him the leeway and latitude to all of this.

With Rove gone, I don’t see how he is covered by Executive Privilege any longer. Some lawyer, please direct me on this one since I haven’t spent a hundred grand on a law degree. Besides, executive privilege is a nebulous area of law anyway.

My guess is that once Congress is back in session, Gonzales is going to appear a few more times, just for shits and giggles and those subpoenas for Rove and Harriet Meyers will be fought to get them sitting in front of cameras under oath.

It’s a winning issue that can be pressed for political advantage. The talking heads on TV (which I don’t watch anymore) will probably say that these are wins for the White House. Anything that takes focus from Iraq saves them. Gonzales resigning takes last Thursday’s report off the talk shows tonight and keeps it from going another week. But what they don’t  understand is that most of the American people aren’t morons. I would say only about 28% are, at least if I remember George W. Bush’s last approval rating correctly.

This is a deep rabbit hole. It’s not just Iraq and Bush’s fuck ups there. He’s fucked up a multitude of things. He’s been hard at work since January 2001 fucking up as much as possible and we only now are going to be able to really get to the bottom of how fucked up he is.

No, it’s not just Iraq, we need to know every fuck up and how he managed to take a great country and turn “America” into a dirty word in even the friendliest countries. It’s the least the Congress can do.
