Go see SiCKO.

That’s my review. You need to see it to understand it and it was well worth the price of admission to find out just how bad our health care system is in America.

Let me tell you one of the stories, so you can understand:

An EMT who did work on Ground Zero required special medication inhalers. Her insurance company denied all of her claims and she ended up paying $120 for each dose. Michael Moore, doing one of his stunts, tried to get a bunch of Ground Zero workers who were sick into Gitmo to get the same outstanding treatment that the “evildoers” were getting.

Long story short, they couldn’t get on the base, but they could go to a pharmacy in the evil country of Cuba (which has a lower infant mortality rate than us, by the way) she was able to get the exact same medication for about five cents a dose.

Not only that, but every single one of them got top notch treatment at a hospital in Cuba without having to pay a single dime.

Don’t even make me tell you about France. I make fun of the French more than anyone, but now I’m thinking of moving there just because the quality of life is so much better than America. How is it that people who eat fatty foods, smoke constantly and are always drinking alcohol live longer than us?

Not only is the health care completely free, but they get reimbursed by the hospital if they have to pay for their transportation to the hospital. And college is free. Everyone gets a minimum of five weeks of paid vacation. Women can take off for an entire year of maternity leave and the government will pay to have a nanny come, cook, clean and do your laundry. I can’t make fun of the French anymore.
If my Social Security disability doesn’t go through, I’m totally moving somewhere with universal health care. As much as we pay in taxes, as much as we’ve paid for the Iraq War, we ought to not have to pay a single red cent to go see the doctor of for our medication.

Throughout the film, I didn’t get the anti-American vibe that I’m sure some rightwingers will claim is there. There was a profound sadness that America is the greatest country on earth, but we are the worst at taking care of each other. Why can’t we?

Why can’t we fulfill our moral obligation to make sure that the least of us has everything that they could possibly need, including quality medical care? Why should every young adult start out their careers with tens of thousands of dollars of debt for higher education? We’re so much better than that.

Go see this movie. Then take two friends with you when you go see it again. And make sure they take two friends when they go see it again. It makes no sense why we have the health care system we have now and we may have to take a page from our Founding Fathers and take to the streets.

When will step up and do the right thing?
