I know, it’s shocking and unbelievable, isn’t it. But, apparently he acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair as he was leading the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton for his affair.

“The honest answer is yes,” Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson to be aired Friday, according to a transcript provided to The Associated Press. “There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There’s certainly times when I’ve fallen short of God’s standards.”

That is such a load of bullshit. His phrasing leads me to believe that this is a calculation on his part before announcing that he’s running in ‘08. Get it out now so it can’t harm him later. It’s like the “When I was young and reckless I was young and reckless” crap Bush tried in 2000. What he failed to mention about being young and reckless was that he was pulled over for a DUI or about all the other times he drove drunk, flipped his dad the bird and drove through hedges and over trash cans.

Anyway, this is Newt being shrewd and trying to get the story out and over so that it is no longer the pink elephant in the room. That’s why he said he was actually not a hypocrite for his actions.

Gingrich argued in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton’s infidelity.

“The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge,” the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton’s 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. “I drew a line in my mind that said, ‘Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept … perjury in your highest officials.”

Gee, I wonder what he has to say about Libby’s conviction this week.

Of course, the difference with Libby and Clinton was that they were gunning for Clinton all along. Clinton perjured himself after the special prosecutor was appointed and the proviso made by Congress of which Gingrich was the Speaker. And that special prosecutor was investigating several specious claims like Whitewater and then the Gennifer Flowers affair. It was the grand jury for the Flowers affair that Clinton lied to. Gingrich sent his dog Ken Starr out to find anything to get Clinton, and Clinton gave them enough rope to hang him with.

That, of course, makes Gingrich a huge fucking hypocrite.
