Wherein I lose all respect for CNN
Published by Nate Nance September 15th, 2006 in Journalism, TelevisionThe past two mornings on CNN I’ve seen stories that just made me question why I watch that channel… ever.
Thursday on CNN Newsroom there was a three-minute segment on the non-relationship between Condi Rice and the foreign minister of Canada. Literally the first half was how they seem to be cozy, cozy; then they admitted that there isn’t actually a relationship, they were just making stuff up. Their defense was ‘All right, so maybe we’re making something out of nothing. OK, we’re almost definitely making something out of nothing, but at least we didn’t do what the “Globe” did, “Bush & Condi, Like Lovers!”‘
We’ve actually progressed to the point in mainstream journalism where reporters report on stories they wish they were true instead of reporting on things that actually happened. I know its got to be tought to fill 24 hours with fresh news coverage, but with a global war on terror and questions about our moral standing and torture, you could maybe have a discussion about that.
And today on American Morning, there was an extended segment on how easy it is to hack the Diebold voting machine. The solution, we found out, was to have a verifiable paper trail. Welcome to 2003 Miles! Because that’s when the rest found that out. It was the Sword of Damocles over the head of the 2004 election since the president of Diebold promised to get President Bush re-elected. And Diebold’s president lives in Ohio. Ohio uses his system. Then there were questions about the voting in Ohio.
Thank you for finally catching up CNN.
Seriously, the only place it seems you can find decent news coverage is Keith Olbermann on MSNBC.
