Local PBS affiliate KNCT has offered to produce a debate for Democrat Mary Beth Harrell and incumbent John Carter. Harrell has accepted, Carter… not so much. The way he put it, he sounded like a total dick. It wouldn’t be the first time, though.

However, in a previous interview this summer, Carter went a step further, saying that Harrell or any other challenger aren’t guaranteed the chance to debate him, despite their candidate status.

“People earn the right to debate me,” Carter said in the interview. “I will determine how and not them.”

Asked what would qualify someone for a debate, Carter said “credibility.”

I guess the people don’t really need a choice if Super Turd is representing them in Washington.

The Harrell camp thinks it’s not just that he’s a dick and doesn’t want to debate, it’s that he needs people to feed him answers to questions.

Harrell’s campaign director, Ken Stewart, said several folks had contacted their office about ‘town hall’ meetings being conducted by Carter over the phone from his office, “He’s dialing constituents from a Washington D.C. phone number. Several listeners told us that Carter sounded like he was being provided with the answers. In several instances, it was said that he would stumble around for a little while before answering, and when he finally responded he sounded letter-perfect.”

I don’t think we need a forum. It seems pretty obvious the district could do a lot better with Mary Beth Harrell in Washington.

Harrell Challenges Carter to Participate in PBS Broadcast
Harrell urges opponent to participate in unscripted Candidates Forum

(Killeen) In a letter to her opponent, Democratic Congressional Nominee and Soldiers’ Mom, Mary Beth Harrell, urged incumbent John Carter to accept the local PBS station’s invitation to participate in a candidates forum to be broadcast prior to the November election. The forum is being produced as a public service to the voters of Central Texas by KNCT Public Television.

In their invitation to the candidates, KNCT made it clear that they will not produce the program if either Harrell or Carter refuses to participate. Harrell has already accepted the forum invitation.

Harrell stated, “I had no choice but to send the letter to Carter because he’s refused to participate in every other candidates forum held in the District. He’s already refused to attend the ones held by LULAC, AARP and even the Rotary Clubs.”

Harrell’s campaign director, Ken Stewart, said several folks had contacted their office about ‘town hall’ meetings being conducted by Carter over the phone from his office, “He’s dialing constituents from a Washington D.C. phone number. In several instances, it was said that he would stumble around for a little while before answering, and when he finally responded he sounded letter-perfect.”

Harrell stated, “the voters in District 31 deserve the opportunity to watch each of us answer questions on the issues that affect their daily lives.”

Harrell continued, “My sons, and many other young men and women, are proudly defending our right to vote as they serve in our Armed Forces. We want an informed electorate to exercise that right. So I urge my opponent to accept right away.” Both of Harrell’s sons serve on active duty and the oldest is in Iraq with the 4th Infantry Division.

KNCT will set a recording date and broadcast date as soon as Carter accepts their invitation.

Harrell is a Killeen attorney and former city prosecutor, married to a retired Army warrant officer, and running for the US Congress in District 31.
