They seem somewhat resolute
Published by Nate Nance July 18th, 2006 in Noteworthy News, Legal Eagles, County PoliticsDo you remember last week when the County Commissioners Court reached a compromise on the display of their resolution condemning lynching and racism. Commissioner Lester Gibson wanted to display the resolution next to a mural depiction of a noose in the rotunda of the courthouse, the rest of the court wanted to go back to pretending that none of it ever happened. They agreed to display the resolution in the county records building to put an end to the debate.
With Commissioner Lester Gibson out of town, the McLennan County Commissioners Court voted today to prohibit the display of any “pictures, plaques or memorials” in any county facility.
Just when I think I’ve got the market cornered on being a total dick to people, my elected officials go and one-up me. Those bastards. By the way, Gibson is out of town with a bunch of middle school students on a civil rights pilgrimmage. Can you say ‘totally f-ing clueless?’
You know, I’m starting to wonder if maybe, possibly, within the realm of possibility, the county court was insincere when it unanimously adopted this resolution. I mean, they don’t want it displayed and they don’t want to talk about it. And they wait for the one black guy to go away to do some civil rights march thing and then they just do whatever they want. There’s a word for white people who don’t like black people’s opinions, but I forget what it is.
