BOR has a link to Metroblogging about the skyscraper projects in downtown Austin. One of those projects requires the demolition of the building that houses Las Manitas, perhaps my favorite Mexican-food restaurant in the world.

As Kelso notes, this’ll mean demolishing the current building that houses Las Manitas along with Tesoros and Escuelita Del Alma. La Peña and Copa are safe because of their historic building status. I’ve heard mention that one or another was an old blacksmith shop and also something about an early train station on those spots. Las Manitas may move into the La Peña location if this deal goes through.

They better, otherwise I’ll be lost the next time I go to a lunch in Austin. I still remember the first time I went to Las Manitas; it was to meet Evan Smith, editor of Texas Monthly for a lunch. I can remember it because that was just last May.
