This morning in the Rose Garden:

President Bush named Henry M. Paulson Jr. , chief executive of Goldman Sachs, as the new Treasury secretary this morning to replace John W. Snow.

Bush made the announcement at 9:15 a.m. from the Rose Garden, saying Paulson would be “the leading force on my economic team.”

I’m sure this all comes as a complete shock to the current Treasury Secretary, John Snow, who has not said that he was resigning.

Actually, I’m sure it wasn’t. Rumors were buzzing this morning that either former Commerce Secretary and Bush friend Don Evans or Paulson would get the nod. Rumors have been buzzing much longer, since the 2004 campaign, that President Bush wanted to axe Snow. He just couldn’t find anyone who wanted the job. It’s hard to find someone who has weight to take that position and say stupid things like “Tax cuts are the answer to everything.” Kudos to the Bush team for finding someone that would!
